The 2008 Annual Meeting program presented a great deal of useful information for companies engaged in technology commercialization projects with their partners in the Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan, plus opportunities for them to network with representatives from national laboratories,
officials from federal agencies and others.

More than 100 people attended a series of events from
March 4-6, 2008 in Washington, D.C. Most events took place
at the elegant Cosmos Club in northwest Washington, near
Embassy Row.

The program began Tuesday evening, March 4, with a buffet dinner and seminar presented by Sarah C. Carey, Partner, Squire, Sanders and Dempsey LLP, on Promises and Pitfalls: Doing Business in Russia and the Broader Region. This kick-off event for the Annual Meeting was attended by USIC company representative and representative from national laboratories.

The following day, Wednesday, March 5, USIC members cast their ballots in the USIC elections during the Members only business meeting where they also learned more about the GIPP budget process.

The General Session opened with USIC’s President’s Report from Gerson Sher and a Keynote Presentation by the Honorable Steven Pifer, Senior Advisor with the Center for Strategic and International Studies & US Ambassador to Ukraine, 1998-2000.

During the luncheon program Senator Pete V. Domenici was honored by USIC members and the leadership of the National Nuclear Security Administration for his years of dedicated service and longstanding support of the Department of Energy’s nonproliferation efforts and his vision in supporting the establishment of IPP (now GIPP).

The afternoon program featured panel discussions about successes and challenges facing USIC members and practical information on growing successful partnerships. Following the program, USIC members gathered with friends and colleagues for the Chairman’s Reception. The following day, March 6th, USIC members visited their Senators and Members of Congress to promote USIC and GIPP and to urge Congress to adequately support these critical nonproliferation programs.
